Year Round Schooling

Innovation, collaboration, and the sharing of services across public and private entities, to benefit our students and the community, are our aims! We are capitalizing on the incredible people and partners surrounding us, in southeastern CT, to do this work together!

Thank you for your interest in learning more about our session-based, multi-year, multi-aged, year-round schooling model. This SDE-approved model remains a choice option for families and staff and has grown naturally over the past three years.

Our session-based schooling model was designed in Superintendent-led “Dreaming Big” meetings, as teachers, staff, students and families planned on reopening post-COVID. The goal of the program was to be able to best meet the needs of students reentering schools, with a wide range of grade-level abilities. The framework of the program is grounded in research-based elements that align to accelerating learning and/or closing achievement gaps.

THE OVERARCHING DESIGN:

  • small group instruction,
  • a team approach to teaching,
  • a strong parental engagement component,
  • curricular compacting and aligned professional development,
  • minimizing transitions/adding instructional time,
  • building strong relationships (teachers loop with students and families for two years),
  • leveraging community partnerships to help bring more and more learning experiences to children inside and outside of the classroom,
  • offering a natural balance of work/vacation time and programmed breaks, which presents choice options for staff and families alike. These include opportunities for added interventions and enrichments for students and added opportunities for extra paid workdays for teachers working in the program, (if desired), scheduled across the year.
  • presenting the unique opportunity to blend (optional) added childcare for families, thus expanding services for children to include up to 60 additional days of high-quality care and learning for families who may need this. This task can be accomplished through fostering partnerships with grants and community agencies. Our optional childcare program is offered onsite, within our schools.
